ELBA ISLAND
Surrounded by the largest marine park in Europe, the island of Elba offers visitors a limpid clear and unpolluted sea and a coastline made up of numerous bays with shallow sandy bottoms and rocky coves and inlets alternating between sand and pebble beaches a rich Mediterranean vegetation and, in the mountainous interior, chestnut woods and small hamlets where time appears to have stood still.
Elba has an ancient history with visible traces to be found of the colonisation by both the Etruscans and the Romans, who exploited the island for its iron ore and granite. In more recent times it belonged to the powerful Florentine Medici family who constructed the fortified town of Portoferraio. However, the most fascinating historical figure associated with the island is surely representated by Napoleon Bonaparte who was Governor of Elba from May 1814 to February 1815.
